“CARNIVAL”

“CARNIVAL”

(Potrebbe contenere ospiti).

"CARNIVAL" is a musical narration, which develops simultaneously in different spaces and moments; Mixers as long as surfboards ready to ride the great wave, shamans and thaumaturges, hordes of explorers and cosmonaut spacecraft, fragments of mirrors, 808, a Sound System or perhaps Ludwig II castle in Bavaria, ecstasy in the eyes of the tiger and a parade float.
We are in Nottingh Hill and yet it seems to be in Trench Town, perhaps in the night in a Berlin club and then wake up the following morning in Belleville, lightsabers, in Queens as in Atlanta, everywhere, gold chains, diamond grillz , vaporous tones and palm trees; finally a Chinese box.
(May contain guests).

Rhythm & Sound w/ The Artist (Burial Mix), monography. 2003 release.
Since the early '90s, with projects on labels like Basic Channel, Maurizio (M Series) or Main Street Records, Berlin-based producer team Rhythm & Sound (Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald) have originated a style between electronic club music and dub/reggae long before it became a genre of its own and have since inspired and influenced several generations of producers. Their album Rhythm & Sound w/ The Artists on the Burial Mix label showcases the series of heavily reggae-oriented tunes that were created -- starting with the landmark "King In My Empire" with Cornel Campbell. This release features eight tunes, voiced in Berlin, New York and Jamaica by seven artists, some of them living legends; Cornel Campbell, Paul St. Hilaire, Shalom, The Chosen Brothers, Love Joy, Jennifer Lara and Jah Batta. Released simultaneously, The Versions (BMD 003CD) contains the corresponding instrumental versions with dubs that integrate minimal structures with Rhythm & Sound's breathtaking atmospheric density. An essential twin-release.

King Tubby meets Rockers Uptown

Share

If you had to pick one album that best represents the pinnacle of the art of dub, you'd cull the candidates down pretty quickly to ten or 12, and it would get very difficult after that. Few would fault you for ending up with this one, though, which stands as perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights: producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo and legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. As you’d expect with Tubby and Pablo at the desk, this is a primal dub affair with all shades of nice keys from the melodically-inclined Augustus. The various sessions for this one over the last few years have featured the Barrett brothers (drum n bass), Robbie Shakespeare (bass), Earl Smith (guitar) as well as the main man on melodica, piano, organ and clavinet. Among other gems, this album offers its title track -- a dub version of Jacob Miller's "Baby I Love You So" -- which is widely regarded as the finest example of dub ever recorded. But the rest of the album is hardly less impressive. "Each One Dub," another cut on a Jacob Miller rhythm, possesses the same dark and mystical ambience, if not quite the same emotional energy, as "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown," and the version of the epochal "Satta Massaganna" that closes the album is another solid winner. Pablo's trademark "Far East" sound (characterized by minor keys and prominent melodica lines) is predominant throughout, and is treated with care and grace by King Tubby, who has rarely sounded more inspired in his studio manipulations than he does here. Absolutely essential.

Taken from Jah Shaka's Dub Salute series, a monograph celebrating the Zulu King of Sound System Culture.

Jah Shaka, DUB SALUTE 3 featuring Willie Williams.

“A keening sound cuts you, trailing a tail like a comet. Shaka playing his harp, then syn-drum; he hits it with a drumstick or plays it with his hands, the abstract texture melodies that race like liquid neon through each vein. This is a music, a great improvisation, that goes beyond reggae or any other musical division. Almost beyond physical music, into the mystic; sheets of energy shooting from the barricading standing store speakers”.

Vivien Goldman

By the 1970s, the “Shaka System” was in full effect, and Shaka had become a key figure within the British dancehall and dub scenes.
Shaka’s system quickly gained a large and loyal following due to his unique mix of profoundly spiritual content, high-energy rhythms, and unmatched, sonorous sound.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Adrian Sherwood Dub Setter

Share

Not so much a true dub version but maybe a dub companion album, Dub Setter features remixes, dubs, outtakes, and “radical reworks” with Perry and Sherwood's Mighty Upsetter album as the source. Make note, these “reworks” are extra “radical,” as in unexpected, even from these two dub mavericks. After two thick and dank dubs that sound like the duo's 1990 effort From the Secret Laboratory but without all the robotics, Dub Setter dives into the unclassifiable with the slow, soft fusion of “Lucky Tarzan,” a cut featuring plenty of sax, gypsy violins, and a solid reggae bassline. Sherwood's work with the Asian Dub Foundation is a heavy influence on the tabla-filled “Elixir of Life,” but nothing in either of the duo’s back catalogs sounds like the exotic “Taboo,” which could be passed off as a Jamaican house band recording Salon music for a David Lynch soundtrack. Every clever and outlandish idea is anchored by full-bodied grooves, and when it comes to sonics, this is a warm, dynamic sound field that's prime for an attentive headphone listen. Highly recommended for the musically adventurous, but Perry fans with expectations should be warned that the album does tip toward Sherwood, and even in Scratch's wildly varied discography, a slow, sumptuous dub album with tablas and some Euro-nostalgia is still a curveball.

Prominent exponent of the Italian Vapor dub scene, nicknamed "The Plug", he has shown himself on the international circuit by proposing his unpublished mixes, in which he establishes a dialogue between past and present in a dialectic suitable on the one hand to reinterpret the great classics of reggae music, dub and black by extension, on the other attentive to new releases, proposing its own vision stripped of conventional symbols and aimed at the autonomous development of a new aesthetic, in a word: VAPOR DUB.
The experimental atmospheres proposed in his musical mixes have had the appreciation and support of important emerging artists such as Moistune and Kronersound, as well as sacred monsters such as Biga Ranx, O.b.f, Mungo's HI-FI and Greenlightsoundsystem, with whom he is collaborating on some press releases. officers.

Vapore Mix

Share

The second episode of "CARNIVAL" is titled Vapore Mix, a musical mélange by the host Sealow, in collaboration with the web radio Astarbene.
Sealow, born Simone Patti, was born in Rome in 1993, and it is precisely in the fertile independent environment of the capital that he will find the necessary ideas to embark on a musical journey of his own, made of cheerful and powerful Caribbean bass rhythms, New Soul progressions and a language inevitably influenced, on the one hand, by the world of Rap between old and new school, and on the other by the important current of Italian songwriting.
After having further broadened his horizons with the foundation of the collective "Astarbene.com" (a portal dedicated to the world of Reggae music and its derivations flanked by a Web Radio) and thanks to an apprenticeship by now important, the Roman singer launches in the publication of a series of singles that will lead him to refine his unique and personal style, in which we can find a small piece of each stage of his journey, but always with an unprecedented facet.
In 2020 he joined the roster of the "Macro Beats" label (former label and springboard for artists such as Ghemon, Mecna and CRLN).
The Roman singer is the perfect synthesis of metropolitan language, cheerful rhythms and typical settings of the new global Urban school. In 2020 he officially debuted with the album "Waves".
